The Problem

Glass that doesn't look dirty until it's clean.

A lake house like this one is built around the view. The rear wall of the A-frame is almost entirely glass, two stories of it, angled toward Greers Ferry Lake to pull the water and the light inside. That design is also what makes the glass hard to keep up with. Pollen, dust, insects, and rain leave a film that builds slowly and evenly, so from a distance nothing looks wrong - the view just gets a little flatter every season.

The second problem was underfoot. The rear deck overlooking the lake turned out to be much slicker than it appeared once I stepped onto it, and the upper gable panes sit two stories above that deck. Setting ladders on an elevated, slick surface to reach glass that high is the kind of risk worth designing out of a job before any equipment gets unloaded.

The Process

Two methods, chosen window by window.

I walked the property before unloading anything. Window sizes, decking material, elevation changes, and the terrain around the house all decide how a job gets done safely, and this one split cleanly in two by height. Everything reachable by hand - all of the interior glass, plus the lower exterior doors and windows - was cleaned traditionally with a squeegee, working top to bottom so drips land on glass that hasn't been finished yet.

The upper exterior windows, the gable glass above the deck, were cleaned from the ground with a four-stage pure water-fed pole system. Tap water carries calcium, magnesium, silica, and iron, and when it evaporates off a window those minerals stay behind as the spots and streaks everyone recognizes. Running it through sediment and carbon filters, then reverse osmosis, then deionization resin strips it to essentially zero total dissolved solids, so the glass can be scrubbed with a soft brush, rinsed, and left to air dry with nothing left on it. That is what makes cleaning two-story glass from the deck possible without putting a ladder on a slick surface.
